Map the Meal Gap

Map the Meal Gap is an annual study by Feeding America that provides detailed, localized data on food insecurity across the United States.

Since 2011, Feeding America has produced the Map the Meal Gap study, providing estimates of local food insecurity and food costs on an annual basis to better understand people and places facing hunger and to inform decisions and actions that will help us achieve our mission.

The report analyzes data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics to estimate food insecurity rates in every county and congressional district, including breakdowns for children and specific demographic groups. it also calculates the average cost of a meal and the overall food budget shortfall, helping to inform local, state, and federal efforts to end hunger.

Feeding America translates that data into insights and tools, like their interactive map , and engages partners to help them use and improve our data and research in the future.

The most recent Map the Meal Gap reports the following data for Florida. (To see this data by county or district, click on the link below)

  • Florida’s food insecure population is over 3.2 million people, about 14% of our state
  • Of this, over 800,000 are children
