Feeding Florida’s food banks recognize that hunger cannot be solved with food alone. By addressing the root causes of hunger, our food banks create pathways to possibilities that empower neighbors to achieve financial stability and self-sufficiency.
In addition to providing millions of pounds of food to families and individuals in need, food banks help neighbors navigate and apply for essential resources, like benefits programs. Several of our food banks also offer life-changing job training and placement programs, helping individuals gain the skills and confidence needed to provide for their families and achieve self-sufficiency. And all of these efforts are connected to health and wellness. By integrating healthcare, food resources, and nutrition education, food banks foster overall community wellbeing.
Workforce Training and Job Placement
To build long-term stability, several of our food banks offer life-changing workforce training programs designed to break the cycles of hunger and poverty. They integrate workforce development programs into their existing operations, creating seamless job placement opportunities that empower former clients to transition from receiving services to serving their communities.
They offer courses and skills training in the following fields:
- Culinary Training
- Warehouse
- Management
- CDL Driving
- Barista Training
Our wrap-around approach to workforce development focuses on building self-sufficiency, not reliance. Students in these programs gain the essential soft skills support and confidence needed to provide for themselves and their families. The programs often include personalized outreach, financial literacy and planning classes, crisis management support, and stipends to ensure neighbors can navigate the journey toward a more stable future. Through specialized job training, interview preparation, and placement services, individuals are empowered to find meaningful employment and achieve long-term financial independence.
Food is Health: Integrating Food and Wellness
Recognizing that “food is health,” food banks are increasingly focusing on preventive care and the critical link between nutrition, the medical community, and overall wellbeing. They see in real time how access to nutritious food and education improves health outcomes and shapes how families make choices when they return to the grocery store. Because food banks meet neighbors where they are, food often becomes the first and most powerful way to understand a community’s needs. What families place in their carts, ask for at distributions, or struggle to access directly reflects broader health challenges, from chronic disease to limited healthcare access.
Over the past decade, food banks have implemented a variety of effective health initiatives aimed at reducing food insecurity and improving health outcomes for individuals with diet-related chronic conditions.
This holistic approach combines healthy food, practical guidance, and real-world application. For example, for neighbors facing high blood pressure or cholesterol, food banks provide specific groceries and recipes that emphasize whole foods to help manage their health on a budget. Through partnerships with healthcare providers and health solutions companies, food banks emphasize the importance of preventive care and how a healthy plate leads to a fuller, more active life.
In addition, all food banks offer evidence-based nutrition education classes offered through our Florida Nutrition Education programming. Direct education and online classes teach families how to use fresh ingredients to improve their health outcomes and ensure they have nutritious food available when it is needed most.
Navigating Essential Benefits
A key component of long-term stability is ensuring neighbors can access the full range of resources available to them. Food banks provide expert guidance to help individuals navigate the application process for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which serves as a temporary but critical bridge to food security. Some food banks take a case management approach to the families they support, providing comprehensive benefits enrollment and care management to help families connect to a coordinated, trustworthy support system that addresses their unique needs. Our food banks and their community partners act as hubs for connecting residents to additional assistance, from disaster recovery to financial resources.
Serving Food, Providing Dignity
Food banks are able to feed individuals and families every day thanks to their network of pantries and strong partnerships across nonprofits, government, and businesses. They create a community that understands that when you provide increased opportunities for your neighbors to access healthy food, you’re giving them the dignity to put food on their table.
