Nourish Florida is Feeding Florida’s statewide Food is Health model, designed to connect Floridians who are living with chronic diseases to essential health resources. Through our unified network of nine member food banks, we provide medically supportive food, practical nutrition education, and comprehensive benefits support.
Florida food banks have implemented and refined multiple Food is Health programs over the past decade, including food pharmacies/ pantries embedded in care settings, produce prescription-style programs, maternal health food delivery, and chronic condition support models that pair food with education and navigation.
By focusing on early indicators of behavior change—such as awareness, confidence, and intention—Nourish Florida is moving the needle toward a healthier future for all Floridians.
Nourish Florida is built on the understanding that healthy food is the front line of defense for managing chronic conditions, a healthy solution is even more important for those who are food insecure or lack consistent access to or awareness of nutritious food sources. Our program offers a structured experience centered on three core pillars:
Participants receive monthly deliveries for six months to ensure they have the right ingredients to stay healthy. Each month, participants can receive boxed deliveries, prepared meals, or even fruit and vegetable vouchers. It can be tailored to best meet the clients needs and promote long term behavior change. These foods are specifically selected to support chronic disease states and are aligned with established dietary guidelines. They are also designed for practical, real households, prioritizing ingredients that are prep-friendly, flexible, and able for use in repeatable meals.
Nutrition education is a core part of Nourish Florida, with a focus on helping people turn information into healthier everyday choices. The goal is not just learning about nutrition, but supporting the habits that actually lead to better health over time.
Education is practical and progressive, starting with awareness of current eating habits and building toward skills that make healthy routines easier to maintain. Everything is tied directly to the food participants receive, so guidance feels relevant and usable in real life.
Each model includes options for printed materials and simple, family‑friendly recipe cards that use the items in the box. Participants can also receive supportive SMS messages through a HIPAA‑compliant platform, along with access to short, mobile‑friendly articles and videos. Materials are low‑literacy and highly visual, emphasizing hands-on guidance like basic cooking skills, storage, substitutions, and meal planning.
The program also includes disease‑specific guidance, as prepared by Registered Dietitians, that clearly links everyday food choices to conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, helping participants understand how small changes can support better health. By pairing evidence-based nutrition education with practical tools and consistent reinforcement, Nourish Florida helps make healthier eating feel achievable and sustainable.
We recognize that health is influenced by many factors outside of the home, often referred to as social determinants of health. Nourish Florida coordinators support participants to determine eligibility and help apply for benefits support programs that would help the client obtain long-term success and sustainability of improved health and nutrition. Participants also receive guidance and referrals for additional needs such as employment, childcare, and housing, as appropriate.
