Taking Action Against Hunger

Every September during Feeding America’s national effort, Hunger Action Month, we raise awareness about food insecurity and encourage people to take actions to combat hunger in a way that’s accessible and meaningful to them. The Feeding Florida network of food banks works tirelessly to combat hunger with support from partners, community organizations, staff, and generous people willing to help. You can join these ranks and make a difference in your community.

Volunteer at a Local Food Bank

One of the most impactful ways to make a difference during Hunger Action Month is by volunteering at your local food bank. Our food banks depend on the support of our dedicated volunteers. Essential to our operations, they help organize, sort, and distribute food to those in need, especially after disaster strikes. By giving your time to a local food bank, you can directly contribute to alleviating hunger in your community. Plus, it’s a hands-on way to see the impact of your efforts as you work alongside others. Find your local food bank here>>

Create a Virtual Food Drive

In today’s digital age, virtual food drives have become an innovative way to engage communities and raise funds for food banks. Feeding Florida and our food banks have embraced this approach, allowing individuals and groups to organize virtual food drives easily. These drives enable people to donate the financial equivalent to meal boxes or food items online, providing flexibility and convenience. Virtual food drives are a powerful tool made possible without even leaving your home, that still make a substantial difference in the fight against hunger.

You can create your virtual food drive during Hunger Action Month, or any time of year, and encourage friends, family, and coworkers to contribute. Connect with your local food bank to find out how!

Educate and Share Stories

Education and storytelling are essential components of Hunger Action Month. Sharing personal stories and experiences related to hunger can be incredibly impactful. Aside from bringing attention to the issue, personalizing the experience and showing how common it is helps to remove the stigma of food insecurity. It helps people connect on a more comfortable, empathetic level. If you or someone you know has been affected by food insecurity, consider sharing your story.

Advocate for Hunger Relief Initiatives

The ultimate goal of the work we do is to alleviate hunger and help families and individuals become self-sufficient. Because of this, Hunger Action Month is also about advocating for change. Feeding Florida, our food banks, and our Feeding America network engage in strategic advocacy efforts to address the root causes of hunger, working with policymakers, community leaders, and other anti-hunger advocates.

Participating in advocacy initiatives during Hunger Action Month can make a significant difference. You can write letters to your representatives, attend local government meetings, or sign a petition to support policies, such as the farm bill, that promote food security and reduce poverty. By raising your voice and urging for change, you become a part of a larger movement that strives for a hunger-free Florida.

Hunger Action Month is a powerful initiative made even more powerful when we all get involved. Through volunteering, advocacy, virtual food drives, and the sharing of stories, we can all make an impact in the fight against hunger. We invite everyone to stand together, raise our voices, and take steps towards a brighter, fuller, future for all.
